The black lipped oysters grow up to 6 inches wide, so pearl size can vary from 8MM to a maximum of 19MM. Sizes over 15MM are quite rare and very expensive. Genuine Tahitian pearls are in a wide range of natural colors, from cool white to deep black, they're often referred to as Tahitian black pearls because they may feature a deep, dark overtone. From the entire harvest, 50% of the oysters will produce pearl, while only 20% of the harvest which is sufficient quality to sell, and 5% of these are the standard required for jewelry.
